President Hasheen Wilson and Vice President Dr. Tyus met with Dr. Sweet Concerning Student Retention

Hasheen Wilson and Dr. Tyus met with Dr. Sweet concerning minority student retention and performance on February 5, 2009. Following is the need and purpose section of the proposal. To read the whole proposal, download the file from the MyYSU portal (BFSA Group):

“The purpose of the project is to create a partnership with the University to increase minority student retention. The Black Faculty and Staff Association applaud the University for making Diversity a strategic priority and specifically setting goals to increase minority student, faculty and staff retention. Nationally, there is a gap of nearly 20 points and at YSU 21 points between the percentage of black and white students who earn an undergraduate degree in six years or less. According to averages (from 2001-2008) calculated by the Journal of Higher Education, 44% of black students graduate within six years from public institutions of higher education. The six year graduate rate for black students at YSU from 2001-2008 was 17.6%. There are many variables that detract black students in Youngstown and this nation from succeeding in college. There are also college retention initiatives that have both closed the gap of points between the percentage of black and white students who earn an undergraduate degree in six years and increase the rate of black graduates in six years.”
