Early College High School Week Observed

As a part of a nationwide event, Youngstown Early College will observe “Early College High School Week” locally on Wednesday, May 6, 2009. Mayor Jay Williams will present a proclamation declaring May 6th Early College Day during a rally at the YSU Amphitheatre (outside Kilcawley/Fountain) at 10:00 AM.

NASA chooses YSU for galaxy image displays

Two mural-sized images of the Messier 101 galaxy digitally photographed by the NASA Administration's Great Observatories are now on display at the Ward Beecher Planetarium at Youngstown State University. NASA selected YSU's planetarium as a permanent site for the spectacular images of the galaxy, known also as M101. Located more than 22 million light years from Earth, it is nearly twice the size of our own Milky Way Galaxy.

Patrick Durrell, planetarium director and an assistant professor of Physics and Astronomy, said the unveiling of the framed photographs in the planetarium lobby kicks off a series of campus events planned for YSU's observance of 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy. ...full article

Marion G. Resch Center for Student Progress Orientation

The Marion G. Resch Center for Student Progress Orientation and First-Year Student Services is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Peer Mentor for the 2009-2010 academic year. The Peer Mentor (PM) serves a critical role in providing first-year students with quality, personalized service. PMs work with all aspects of First-Year and Transfer Student Orientation Programming and First-Year Student Services assisting in creating a positive educational experience for new students and helping students with their transition to college. A PM serves as a role model, a resource, and a crucial link between students and the University.

Applicant Requirements:

  • 2.5 cumulative GPA
  • 12 semester hours completed
  • Full-time student during regular academic year
  • Availability to participate in all orientation and training activities as well as weekly staff meetings.
