Distingushed English Professor Dr. Salvatore Attardo leaves YSU

Dr. Salvatore Attardo, distinguished English professor, is leaving YSU because officials refused to continue to support him as editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Humor. He had asked the university to continue to allow him to have a reduced teaching load of two courses each semester to the normal faculty load of four courses. along with a research assistant. This was an arrangement Attardo had with the former Provost Tony Atwater for the past five years. The agreement ended this year. My Two Cents:
This is another example of the university not being concerned with the quality of education but the quantity of classes; not concerned with enriching the educational experience of students by supporting such distinguished and accomplished professors such as Dr. Attardo. Besides being the editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Humor, Dr. Attardo was involved in some of the early research that resulted in Ontological Semantics. He was involved in the birth of Computational Humor (at the Enschede conference, in 1996) along with:

  • Doug Hofstadter
Author and Pulitzer Prize Winner of Godel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid

  • Victor Raskin
  • Oliviero Stock
  • Graeme Ritchie
He has published two books and numerous articles on humor, irony, and related subjects. He has also published in pragmatics and sociolinguistics. This year Dr. Attardo has been chosen to receive the “Distinguished Professor of Scholarship”.
